What are my rights when papers for divorce have been served to spouse and he refuses to cooperate?

Asking for a divorce from husband, paid a lawyer $2000.00 last August. Lawyer just now sent paperwork to spouse. Not getting any response or cooperation from him. Lawyer says the judge will dismiss the case on May 9th. Lawyer also says it will cost me $230.00 to start again and $2000.00 more to take him to trial! She hasn't yet earned the first $2000.00! What can I do if my spouse does not cooperate??? Do I have to stay married???
